Phonics: Phase 2 to 5

(including full lesson planning for each phase)

The training will address the following:

  • Securing subject knowledge of the alphabetic code to support successful teaching of phases 2, 3, 4 and 5 of Letters and Sounds
  • Teaching ‘blending and segmenting’ in order to read and spell words
  • Exploring a range of resources to support delivering engaging sessions
  • Making clear links between phonics and word-reading, fluency and spelling
  • Tackling high frequency words

  • Delivering systematic, synthetic phonics teaching and learning back in your setting/classroom
  • Supporting meeting the reading ELG: ‘Children read and understand simple sentences.  They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately.  They also read some common irregular words.’
  • Supporting meeting the writing ELG: ‘Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways in which match their spoken language.  They also write some irregular uncommon words.’
  • Understanding of the requirements of the Phonics Screening Check

This course is suitable for:

  • All adults delivering phonics teaching across the school/English leads
  • Newly and recently qualified teachers
